BoatMatey Privacy Policy

Last updated: 24 September 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how BoatMatey ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares information about you when you use our mobile and web applications and related services (the "Services"). BoatMatey is a product of Donkey Labs.

By using the Services, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

1. Who We Are and How to Contact Us

Data Controller:
Martin Cavey
Email: [email protected]

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or our data practices, please contact us at the email address above.

2. Information We Collect

We may collect the following categories of information:

We do not intentionally collect sensitive personal data (such as health or financial account numbers) unless you choose to provide it. We encourage you not to share more personal data than is necessary to use the Services.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

Under Jersey data protection law we process your personal data only where we have a valid legal basis, such as your consent, performance of a contract with you, compliance with a legal obligation, or our legitimate interests (e.g. improving and securing the Services).

4. BoatMatey AI

BoatMatey AI is an optional feature. This section explains what happens to your information when you use it. If you never use BoatMatey AI, nothing in this section applies to you.

What is sent when you ask a question. To produce an answer, we send the following to our AI providers:

Only what is relevant to your question is sent. We do not send your payment details, and we do not send other customers' data.

Who processes it. We use two AI providers as processors on our behalf:

Both operate outside Jersey, principally in the United States. Section 6 explains the safeguards that apply to transfers of that kind. We use these providers under their business API terms, which do not permit your content to be used to train their models, and we do not provide your content to anyone for model training.

What we store. So the assistant is useful across sessions, we keep:

Your control over it. You can delete an individual conversation, or an individual manual, from within the app at any time. Deleting your account deletes all of it, along with the rest of your data, as described in section 7.

What you should not send. Please do not put information into BoatMatey AI that you would not want processed by the providers named above – in particular other people's personal information, or documents you are not entitled to share.

A note on accuracy. BoatMatey AI can produce answers that are wrong, incomplete, or invented. It is not a substitute for a qualified professional, and you should verify anything important before acting on it. This is a matter for our Terms of Use rather than this policy, but it matters enough to repeat here.

5. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information.

We may share your information:

6. International Transfers

Your information may be stored and processed in countries outside Jersey (for example, where our hosting or database providers operate, and – if you use BoatMatey AI – where our AI providers operate, principally the United States). Those countries may have different data protection laws.

Where we transfer personal data outside Jersey, we will ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as Jersey-approved standard contractual clauses or adequacy decisions, as required by Jersey law.

7. Data Retention

You may delete your data at any time by deleting your account. Upon confirming account deletion, all data we hold for your account will be automatically and permanently deleted.

How to delete your account: In the BoatMatey app or web app, open Settings (or Account), then use Delete Account & Data. You will be asked to confirm; once you confirm, your account and all associated data (including boats, logs, any BoatMatey AI conversations, saved diagnoses and uploaded manuals, and any other information we hold) will be permanently deleted. This action cannot be undone. Note: Deleting your account does not cancel any active App Store or Google Play subscription; you must cancel the subscription separately in the relevant store.

We also retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to:

When we no longer need your personal information, we will delete or anonymise it. Where deletion is not immediately possible (e.g. in backups), we will store it securely and isolate it from further processing until it can be deleted.

8. Your Rights (Jersey)

Under Jersey data protection law (the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018), you have rights including:

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity before responding.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner (JOIC) if you believe we have not handled your personal data properly. You can find their details at jerseyoic.org.

9. Cookies and Similar Technologies

If we use cookies or similar technologies (e.g. on a web version of BoatMatey), we may collect information about your use of the Services, such as pages visited, time spent, and preferences. You can manage cookies through your browser or device settings.

10. Third-Party Links and Services

The Services may contain links to third-party websites or services (e.g. documentation, mapping, or external tools). This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third parties. We encourage you to read their privacy policies before using their services.

11. Security

We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information against loss, misuse, unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction, including encryption in transit (e.g. HTTPS), access controls, and regular updates.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data.

12. Children's Privacy

The Services are not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal data, please contact us at [email protected] and we will take steps to delete it where required by law.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date at the top. We may also notify you of significant changes via the app or by email where appropriate.

Your continued use of the Services after the effective date of any changes means you accept the updated Privacy Policy.
